Source: Pioneer Press, St.mini storage Paul, Minn.Oct. 04--Minnesota's Prep Bowl might need to temporarily leave Minnesota. That's one option the Minnesota State High School League is considering for the 2015 season. The league will need a short-term home for the Prep Bowl, a two-day series of championship games for all seven classes. One solution to come out of the MSHSL's board of directors meeting Thursday in Brooklyn Center is moving the championship games to the FargoDome or the Alerus Center in Grand Forks, N.D.The games have been played at the Metrodome for the past 31 seasons, but the Vikings' indoor stadium will be torn down to make room for a new stadium on the same site. The Gophers' outdoor TCF Bank Stadium is unavailable in 2015.The Vikings' new indoor stadium will be host to the championship games when it's completed, but that isn't scheduled to happen until 2016.Moving the games across the Red River would keep them indoors and out of the late-November weather, and Cretin-Derham Hall coach Mike Scanlan thinks that's a pretty good idea."I'm all for this; count me in," Scanlan said. "My mother taught me that when it's raining, you come inside. Same with the cold. At that time of year, the season should be either over or you're playing indoors. It's got my vote."The board of directors on Thursday tabled the discussion until its December meeting. A decision could be made by January.Thanksgiving weekend is the traditional date for the Prep Bowl, and the Gophers have home games scheduled against Illinois on Nov. 21 and Wisconson on Nov. 28. The only weekend available to the high schools would be Nov. 14-15.Like Scanlan, Stillwater coach Beau LaBore said he is OK with moving the games across state lines, but for a different reason."If I had the luxury of worrying about it, I wouldn't care if the game was played in Texas," he said.MSHSL associate director Kevin Merkle, who oversees football, admitted he has doubts about the proposal."I don't know how much reality there is; it's hard to say," he said. "Having them there has been mentioned before. We don't ha儲存e any idea if (the North Dakota stadiums are) even available or if (they are) available for one or two days. It is very premature talk on this. We'll see where it goes."Other options include:-- Starting the season one week earlier, on Aug. 10, to allow TCF Bank Stadium to host the Prep Bowl on Nov. 14-15.-- Trimming the number of playoff teams from eight to four in each section. That option wouldn't affect the state's largest schools.-- Shortening the regular-season schedule from eight games to seven. On Thursday, the board formally approved playing the 2014 Prep Bowl Nov. 21-22 at TCF Bank Stadium.Future football scheduling continues to be problematic.Merkle presented pros and cons of the MSHSL's geographic section scheduling concept. Under such a scenario, schools would be placed in geographic regions with an emphasis on enrollment, competitive balance and maintaining natural rivalries. He said 52 percent of Minnesota high schools participate in football-only conferences. That number is 70 percent when Twin Cities metro schools are removed from the equation."Many of our schools are already using a concept similar to this," Merkle said. "They see it works. There's also some concern that 'I already have something that works, don't mess with me.' The devil is in the details. Some might be challenging to solve."In other news:-- The board approved the placement of Irondale, Spring Lake Park and Totino-Grace in the Northwest Suburban Conference, and Fridley and Columbia Heights in the Tri-Metro.-- Championship games for the 2014 state baseball tournament will be played June 14 at Target Field. Monday, June 16, is the backup date.-- The state soccer tournament is likely to be played at St. Cloud State University in 2014 and '15, but the board didn't make it official with a vote.-- A softball advisory committee recommended the state tournament be expanded from three classes to four by 2016.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Pioneer Press (St. Paul, Minn.)
