Source: The Columbus Dispatch, OhioOct.儲存 20--Regardless of how much success Anna and Alle Sanford had before the girls tennis state tournament and will reap going forward, the trophy they won yesterday will hold a special place on the family mantelpiece. The Olentangy Orange sisters capped an impressive tournament by making short work of Alexa Abele and Maggie Skwara of Cincinnati Sycamore 6-0, 6-2 for the Division I doubles title at the Elysium Tennis Center in Plain City. The event was moved indoors because of inclement weather. The Sanfords, who celebrated with a leaping chest bump, lost only two games in four matches over two days."This has been a goal of ours since we were little, and even though we play singles most of the time, we started working toward this about a year and a half ago," said Anna, a two-time state qualifier in singles. "What makes this so special for us is that because of our age difference, we knew there was only going to be one shot for us to do this together."While senior Anna heads off to play at Ohio State next fall, her 14-year-old freshman sister has a promising singles career ahead of her. The Sanfords knew they had just a small window to play on the same doubles team."Looking at the scores, it seems like it was easy, but only the people in their support team can appreciate how much hard work, tough losses and tears went into preparing for this moment," Orange coach Matt Rutherford said."We've devoted a lot of time in the past year and a half implementing all the stuff that it takes to be successful in doubles, and everything just started coming together. In fact, I think the scores will reflect that the girls played better in the state than they did in the sectionals and districts because their communication and focus helped them reach that level."In the semifinals and finals, the Sanfords took turns hitting blistering low ground strokes, and their above-average height and jumping ability paid off around the net. Although it is not always the case in doubles, both players were equally mini storageffective. In fact, if it weren't for Alle's laid-back attitude, one would have a difficult time telling them apart."It helps a lot that we're sisters," Alle said. "We know each other's strengths and weaknesses, and that helps us stay under control and focus on our strategy. We were definitely gaining confidence each time we went out on the court."It marked the third straight time and fourth in five years that a central Ohio doubles team won a girls Division I title.Watterson senior Lauren Ghidotti capped a fine career by falling to Cincinnati Ursuline senior Mehvish Safdar 6-0, 6-2 in the Division I singles final. The match was much more competitive that the score would indicate, but the Minnesota-bound Safdar -- a three-time state champion -- seemed to have one more shot in her bag during long rallies.Ghidotti, who placed second and third in doubles in 2011 and 2012, respectively, had little time to rest after a somewhat draining 6-2, 7-5 win over close friend Ellee Bullock of Dublin Jerome in the semifinals. In the final, the Xavier recruit became visibly frustrated by the dazzling shot-making of Safdar. Ghidotti declined to comment afterward."Lauren doesn't have anything she should be upset about," Watterson coach Susan Weil said. "She fought hard against a great, great player, and there were a lot of excellent points played in that match."The thing is, when you play someone the caliber of Safdar, you have to play aggressively and execute in that style. Safdar can hit the ball back and forth all day. Knowing that you have to come in and take risks in order to shorten points, that takes a lot of guts in a championship setting like this."Bullock finished third in singles, and the Pickerington Central team of sisters Isis and Kyah Thomas took third in doubles.None of central Ohio's Division II entries made the semifinals.sblackledge@dispatch.comCopyright: ___ (c)2013 The Columbus Dispatch (Columbus, Ohio) Visit The Columbus Dispatch (Columbus, Ohio) at .dispatch.com Distributed by MCT Information Servicesself storage
