Source: Post-Bulletin, Rochester, Minn.新蒲崗迷你倉Sept. 14--Early in Friday's Big Nine Conference tilt at John Drews Field, Rochester John Marshall struggled to run the football. So the Rockets went to the air. And Kaeleb Stangler was up to the challenge. The JM senior signal-caller threw for 248 yards and three touchdowns while leading the Rockets to a 42-22 victory over the Austin Packers.Stangler completed 12 of 19 passes. He delivered four different times on fourth down, including a couple of touchdowns on fourth down.Stangler made big-time throws, but it helped to have Brody Diggins roaming the sidelines, pulling down Stangler's lengthy heaves."(Stangler) is a talented kid," Jack Drews said. "But he's got some good receivers, too. Brody had a huge game."Austin coach Brett Vesel said the Rockets weren't doing anything fancy. But the Packers couldn't stop it."(Stangler) throws a great deep ball," Vesel said. "It was just simple stuff. He would find the one-on-one coverage and just throw it up there, and we couldn't stop it."While the passing game carried the Rockets in the first half, they found the running game in the second half. That allowed them to control the clock and pull away from the Packers."They were doing some things to us up front, so we made some changes and trapped a little in the middle with Kenny (Maclin)," Drews said. "That allowed us to come at them more and control the clock."The Rockets were sound on offense and defense (six sacks, three turnovers), but Drews said penalties are a concern. JM had six infractions that were enforced."We have to cut the penalties out," Drews said. "We can't do that next week. We have (Mankato) West coming to town, and we're going to have to play a lot better than we played (Friday). But we're 3-0 and we're glad to be there."Stangler started the scoring with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Diggins with 7:24 left in the first quarter. Jason Rieke had a 46-yard run on the drive, but he was bottled up for the remainder of the first half.On the ensuing kickoff, Austin's Bret Lukes got loose and pulled away from the defenders for an 85-yard touchdown. But JM came right back, with Stangler throwing his second TD pass, this time finding Sam Aakre for a 30-yard strike.Rieke closed the first half with a 1-yard touchdown run, giving JM a 21-7 lead at the break. The score was set up by Stangler's 22-yard pass to Diggins on a big fourth-down play.Diggins caught his second touchdown pass from Stangler to start the third quarter, this time from 29 yards out.Rieke scored again three minutes later on a 10-yard run.JM's final touchdown came when backup QB Adam Herzog lofted a nice pass to Sam Moen, who took it into the end zone from 30 yards out.The Romini storagekets finished with 472 yards of total offense, including 286 passing yards. Rieke led the ground game finishing with 20 carries for 123 yards. Diggins caught five balls for 87 yards.Nate Conner paced Austin with 107 yards rushing on seven carries, though most of his yardage came late in the game. The Packers dropped to 0-3 overall.John Marshall 42, Austin 22Austin#7#0#7#8--#22JM#14#7#14#7-- #44First QuarterJM -- Brody Diggins 14 pass from Kaeleb Stangler (kick failed), 7:24.
